How safe is your domain name?

Do you have your own domain? Many people do. It’s a platform, a place to market yourself.

But it’s also vulnerable – as author Sharon Maas found out recently. She forgot to update her contact email address with her domain provider and never received notification that her domain was about to expire. Now she’s struggling to recover her domain, sharonmaas.com, from the hands of the domain predators that bought it. You can read more about Sharon’s story here: My Domain was stolen from under my nose

So – what can you do to protect your domain?

  • make sure your email address is kept up to date with your domain provider;
  • use a static email address (such as gmail or yahoo) that you can always access, even if you change ISP;
  • see if your domain provider has an automatic renewal option.

If you do lose your domain, it is possible to get it back, especially if you use it as a platform. But this can be expensive. Better to be safe than sorry, huh?
